Vehicle Preparation

Prepare the vehicle for service.

  1. Park the vehicle on a level surface.
  2. Engage the parking brake.
  3. Place wheel chocks around the tires.
  4. Allow the exhaust system to cool.
  5. Lift the vehicle using a jack.
  6. Secure the vehicle on jack stands.
  7. Spray all exhaust fasteners and rubber hangers with penetrating lubricant.
  8. Wait 15 minutes for the lubricant to penetrate rust.

Factory Exhaust Removal

Remove the existing exhaust system components.

  1. Identify the front connection point behind the catalytic converter.
  2. Loosen the bolts or clamps at the front flange.
  3. Support the exhaust system with a jack or stands to prevent dropping.
  4. Remove the exhaust hangers from the rubber isolators using a pry bar.
  5. Determine if the factory system requires cutting for removal.
  6. If cutting is required, measure the distance specified in the MBRP instructions.
  7. Cut the pipe using a reciprocating saw.
  8. Lower the factory exhaust system from the vehicle.
  9. Remove the system from the workspace.

MBRP Exhaust Installation Steps

Follow these steps to install the new MBRP components.

1. Component Identification

Unpack the MBRP kit. Verify all parts against the included packing list. Lay the components on the floor in the order of installation. Ensure the pipes are free of debris.

2. Extension Pipe Installation

Install the extension pipe to the front factory connection.

  • Slide the extension pipe onto the factory lead pipe.
  • Loosely install a supplied band clamp.
  • Do not tighten the clamp at this stage.

3. Muffler Installation

Attach the muffler to the extension pipe.

  • Slide a band clamp over the muffler inlet.
  • Insert the muffler onto the extension pipe.
  • Ensure the muffler is oriented correctly.
  • Install the muffler hangers into the factory rubber isolators.

4. Over-Axle Pipe Installation

Route the over-axle pipe over the rear axle assembly.

  • Slide a band clamp over the over-axle pipe inlet.
  • Connect the pipe to the muffler outlet.
  • Insert the pipe hangers into the rear rubber isolators.
  • Ensure clearance around the suspension and brake lines.

5. Tailpipe and Tip Installation

Complete the exhaust run with the tailpipe and decorative tip.

  • Install the tailpipe onto the over-axle pipe.
  • Secure with a band clamp.
  • Slide the exhaust tip onto the tailpipe.
  • Adjust the tip to the desired depth and angle.
  • Tighten the tip bolt.

Final Alignment and Tightening

Ensure the system is positioned correctly before final tightening.

  1. Check the entire system for clearance.
  2. Ensure a minimum of 1-inch clearance from all heat-sensitive components.
  3. Verify the exhaust does not contact the frame or body panels.
  4. Start tightening clamps from the front of the vehicle toward the rear.
  5. Torque all band clamps to the specifications in the MBRP manual.
  6. Ensure all hangers are vertical and not under excessive tension.

Post-Installation Inspection

Verify the integrity of the installation.

  1. Start the engine.
  2. Listen for exhaust leaks at every joint.
  3. Inspect all connections for soot or air discharge.
  4. Lower the vehicle from the jack stands.
  5. Perform a test drive of 15 to 20 minutes.
  6. Allow the system to cool completely.
  7. Re-tighten all clamps after one heat cycle.
