De-icer work by redirecting warmer, denser water from the depths to the surface, where it can serve to prevent ice formation or melt existing ice.  De-icers will work best 2.5 to 5 feet below the water surface.  De-icing pushes warm to the bottom of the boat  helping to prevent ice from forming on the boat
